What is a beaker?

A beaker is a scientific instrument that is basically a cup with graduation lines and a pour spout for easy transfer of liquids. Made from multiple different materials based on the substance being measured or transferred.

Glass beakers are used for getting general measurements around the lab, usually for mixtures that do not require exact precision, but are fine with being close. 

Why is a glass beaker so thin?

The beaker glass is made of borosilicate for chemical compatibility and strength, but the walls are thin to prevent breaking from heat shock. Thinner walls transfer heat faster, and thus have less of a chance to break when exposed to high temps. 

What is the safe use of a glass beaker?

A glass beaker should never be placed in a microwave, the uneven heating of a microwave will create hot spots on the glass that will lead to cracks. Heating a beaker should be done gradually on a heated surface such as a hot plate. 

Best way to clean a glass beaker?

The best way to clean a beaker depends on what was used in the beaker. Sometimes soap and water is best, other times chemicals like alcohol are needed to clean the walls. Ideally, a glass beaker will be placed into an ultrasonic cleaner with a cleaning solution.
